Killer Whales or Whale Killers? Wolves of the Sea
Killer Whales or Whale Killers? Wolves of the Sea
The planet where we spend our entire lifetime is quite amazing and one can clearly say that we are still devoid of things that exist today. With the amount of knowledge and technical expertise that we have, it can be simply stated that humans have in fact gained some insight into how nature has designed and established herself to sustain for these many years and much more to come.
The Ocean across the globe is quite huge. It has been stated that only 10 percent of the organisms that exist today are known to humans. Atlantic, Indian, Pacific, and Arctic ocean constitute the entire water content in this world.
We know that wolves live together as a family or pack and attack their prey as one. So, the same exists too in the sea. It is none other than Killer Whales, generally called orcas.
So Why are the killer whales called killer whales?
This would be the first question that one might have. It is quite strange for us to hear such a whale name. These orcas are whales with teeth and come under the Dolphin family. These mammals live in packs of 12 to 18 and attack their prey together.
The name given is quite the opposite. These animals are whale killers. For them, no organism living in the sea are a threat. The diet of these orcas is quite diverse as it ranges from small seals, walrus, whales, the great white shark as well as several fishes.
How do these killer whales look like?
It is the toothed whale and is the largest mammal of the dolphin family. The mammal is distinguished by its black and white coloration. The dorsal fins of these whales are large that can grow up to a height of 3.5 to 4 feet alone, along with the amazingly sleek body, and perfectly designed for traveling several miles beneath the ocean with ease. These mammals can grow anywhere from 7 to 10 meters in length. Usually, females are a bit shorter than male orcas.
Habitat of Killer Whales: Where are these mammoth creatures found?
These creatures are apex predators and are never attacked by other organisms living in the sea. The orcas can be found in most of the parts of the ocean ranging from artic to the Antarctic, pacific to Indian. The only place that is devoid of these creatures is the black sea, baltic seas, and in some parts of the arctic ocean. It is quite amazing and enthralling to know that these species can thrive in any part of the ocean and live an exotic lifespan from 30 to 80 years.
Preys of Killer Whales:
1. Blue Whales: The Army personnel across the globe can learn global tactics from these Killer Whales. These mammals create separate groups to close on their prey. One group will be designated to search the prey while the other two groups will be ready to get to the prey and attack the animal. It is a known fact that the length of the Blue Whales can range somewhere from 79 to 82 ft. It is quite massive and huge. Though it is quite rare that these Orcas attack Blue Whales, the tactics used during the encounter is quite amazing.
2. Sperm Whales: Another set of whales that are quite huge and are rarely attacked by these orcas or the killer whales.
3. Other Whales: These are the ones that become the prey of these wolves of the sea. These include Minke whales, grey whales, as well as humpback whales.
4. Penguins: It is one of the favorite dishes of these Killer Whales. The orcas living in the greater pacific thrive on these penguins. A huge number of penguins reach the Galapagos Island traveling several KMs. The Killer whales residing in this part of the world dare to reach almost towards the shores to catch its prey.
5. Walrus: Another favorite meal of the orcas. These mammals use the same technique to attack the walrus. Once captured, it is very difficult for the walrus to evade from the attack imposed by these orcas.
6. The Great White Shark: One of the deadliest attackers of the sea are these Great White sharks. The encounter amongst the orcas and these sharks are quite uncommon. One can state these as a rare sight of spectacle. The Killer whales are quite interested in the liver of the great white sharks. The liver contains humongous amounts of proteins that are needed for the growth of kids of killer whales. The reason that these orcas weigh over the great white shark is the fact that these are lone hunters while the former is not. So when attacked in groups, the shark is outnumbered and at times dies during its encounter with the orcas.
Reading about these mammals does create ripples on our bodies upon knowing their attacking skills. It is quite relieving to know that these mammoth creatures seldomly attack humans. Cage is not at all suitable for these mammals. The orcas do not live for a longer period when captured to keep as a pet. There are a lot of cases where the Orcas bang their heads against the walls rupturing its brain cells and ultimately die inside the pool. There have been several pacts to avoid such criminal acts against these amazing creatures.
Killer whales are often captured by the humans for the stage shows in amusement parks. These giant creatures are trained to perform different tricks in front of huge crowds. The orcas in capture do not live long and at times dies before even reaching its adulthood. It is quite disheartening that such kind of acts do happen even today though being lesser than what it used to be.
