Famous Five of Indian Cricket

Famous Five of Indian Cricket

All of us know that some of the greatest legends who totally changed the way cricket is played have retired from all formats in the International Arena. Even today, if spoken about them we sense a feeling that cannot be expressed instantaneously. The first player in this group made his international appearance way back in 1989 when he was just 16 years. Well, he is none other than Sachin Tendulkar- Rightly called as “God of Cricket”.  I must say that there were times when we used to stop watching cricket soon after Sachin gets out. The amount of runs that he amassed during his carrier is something that as a person is almost impossible to break. People will agree with me on that.

Slowly, another 2 players made their way to this game. It was none other than Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid. Sourav Ganguly is famously known for his brilliant knock of 131 runs at Lord’s stadium. It was then time for “The Wall” aka Rahul Dravid to make his entry in the field. He made his debut along with Sourav Ganguly. Even Dravid would have joined the record books for scoring a century in a debut but fell short just by 5 runs. The dedication and concentration during his batting is something that impressed every individual across the world. Even today, if you ask someone about Dravid and an opinion on his batting, people will surely say his temperament to bat for long hours in the field. The captaincy that Sourav- " God of Offside" brought into play was completely new and he is the main person who was responsible for the birth of New Era in the Indian Cricket.

Another batsman, famous for his wrist play, an elegance in style, V.V.S. Laxman made his entry. When spoken about Laxman, our first remembrance is the famous knock that he played during the Australian Series 2001-02 where India was almost about to suffer an innings defeat in the second test match. His knock of 281 in the match brought India back in the Game and the team could defeat them in that match as well as the next two matches. Not to forget, Dravid too made a century in the same test match and helped the team to win the match.  Very few know that Dravid held the record of most double centuries by an Indian batsman in International Test Cricket for a long time until it got broken by other players.

There were many occasions when these greats snatched victories right from the defeat and thought us that we should never lose faith in ourselves and thrive to win under any circumstances in the real world.

Last but not the least, another batsman, from Delhi, Virender Sehwag made his entry in a brilliant fashion in the 2001 series. All the players were completely astonished by the way he played his game. Even today, international players fear this batsman as he is known for bringing nightmares to the bowlers right on the cricket field. A swashbuckling batsman, who played fearless cricket with a record of scoring 2 triple centuries, a double century, that very few opening batsmen had achieved during his presence in cricket.

Classic Captaincy, brilliant wrist play, The Wall, The God of Cricket, and a swashbuckling opener created tremors in the opposite teams during the 1990’s until 2010’s.  This Blog is just a tribute to those players and a way to say that “we miss you even today”.
